Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A name or location entered in a search tool is sent directly to the outside provider operating that tool. The provider processes the query and supplies its results. We do not keep a separate log of those search terms.
Messages and Contact Submissions
We retain an email or direct message as needed to answer it. It is not shared beyond our organization unless disclosure is required by law.
Data We Gather Automatically
Our systems automatically receive basic technical details when a page loads:
- The IP address assigned to your device
- Which browser you are using and its version
- Your device type and operating system
- The pages you visited and how long you stayed on each
- The site that sent you here, if any
- Timestamps for each page view
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small files saved on a device. They and analytics services help combine traffic data, such as popular pages and points where visits end. Browser controls can block cookies, although doing so may change how some features work.
What We Do With This Data
- Keeping the site up, running, and loading quickly
- Sending your search requests to the right partner service
- Figuring out which pages people find useful and which need work
- Tracking down and fixing technical issues
- Showing ads that may line up with your interests
No Criminal-Record Data on File
Clay County Criminal History does not keep, compile, or sell a database of personal criminal records. It identifies official routes through the Sheriff, Clay courts, West Virginia State Police Criminal Identification Bureau, corrections systems, and West Virginia Sex Offender Registry. We are not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and visitor information is not assembled into consumer reports or third-party dossiers.
Third-Party Search Partners
Outside companies operate the search boxes. Information submitted there is governed by the provider's policy, retention rules, and sharing practices rather than this policy. Read those terms before running a query.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to Clay County offices, West Virginia courts and agencies, legal resources, or outside search tools. Once you leave this site, the destination's privacy policy applies. Review it before providing personal information.
Advertising providers may use their own systems to track visits across websites and select ads.
Who Might See Your Data
We do not sell personal data. Some information may end up with:
- Search partners that handle queries you run on our site
- Analytics services we use to track traffic and performance
- Ad networks that place ads on our pages
- Law enforcement or government bodies when a valid legal order requires it
How We Protect Your Data
Reasonable security measures are used for collected data. No internet system is completely secure, however, so we cannot guarantee that unauthorized access will never occur.
Users Under 18
The site is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If such data is identified, it will be deleted.
Your Data Rights
Applicable law may provide more rights. West Virginia FOIA, W. Va. Code Chapter 29B-1, governs access to public agency records, while W. Va. Code §15-2-24 limits dissemination of State Police criminal-history data. Those laws do not turn this private site into a public custodian. Subject to applicable law, you may:
- Ask for a copy of what we have on file about you
- Have us fix information that is wrong
- Request that we erase your data
- Opt out of certain kinds of data processing
Updates to This Policy
We may revise this policy. A changed version will appear here with its new effective date.
